What is PNR Status?
As we sometime do not get confirmed reservation and a ticket with RAC or W/L status is issued instead, this W/L or RAC status which is alloted to your PNR changes if any confirmed or RAC booking is cancelled and you move up in the queue and finally if sufficient booking are cancelled then your booking status will change from Waitinglist W/L to RAC or CNF (Confirmed) and a seat/berth is alloted at the time of Charting which is generally done 2 hours before your departure time, to get the update and live status of you.

Where can I find my PNR Number ?

For tickets booked through IRCTC website or IRCTC Agents which is also called E-TICKET, the PNR number is mentioned at the Top, in a cell which says PNR No:

For the tickets which are booked through the Railway Ticketing window (I-TICKET), the PNR number is mentioned on the Top Left corner which says PNR No.

PNR status can be checked online easily through the official Indian railway: www.indianrail.gov.inor IRCTC website: www.irctc.co.in. On the website, you just need to go to the PNR section which is available on the homepage itself. There insert the 10-digit PNR number and click on "Go" button. Within a few seconds current reservation status update will appear on your screen.

Check PNR Status by SMS

Nowadays people are more cling to messaging. IRCTC has also come up with the messaging system for getting status update of your ticket. You just need to send SMS to any of these numbers 139, 54959, 57886, 5676747 and they will reply you with your current status updates. For example: SMS "PNR space 10-digit ticket PNR No." to any of those number.
